Lake Bunyonyi, meaning "Place of many little birds" in Runyankole, is one of Uganda's most beautiful and serene destinations. Located between Kabale and Kisoro, this stunning lake is considered the deepest in Uganda (estimated 900 meters) and is completely bilharzia-free, making it one of the few lakes in Africa where you can swim safely.

The lake features 29 islands, each with its own unique history and character. Punishment Island (Akampene) was used by Bakiga people to abandon unmarried pregnant girls - a practice that continued until the 1940s. Other islands include Bushara Island (owned by a eco-camp), Kyahugye Island (with wildlife), and Bwama Island (which once housed a leprosy treatment center).

Canoeing is the most popular way to explore the lake's islands and shoreline. The calm, clear waters reflect the surrounding terraced hills of Kigezi (called "Switzerland of Africa"). Traditional dugout canoes (locally called "mukene") offer authentic experiences, while modern kayaks are available for self-guided exploration.

The surrounding area is rich in birdlife with over 200 species including the grey-crowned crane, herons, weaver birds, and kingfishers. The terraced hillsides provide excellent hiking opportunities with panoramic views over the lake.
