Kibale Forest
Primate capital of Africa with 13 primate species including chimpanzees. Excellent chimpanzee trekking experiences.
Kibale Forest National Park is known as the "Primate Capital of the World" with an incredible 13 primate species living in its 795 square kilometers of tropical rainforest. The forest has the highest concentration of primates in Africa, making it the premier location for chimpanzee trekking.
The park is home to approximately 1,500 chimpanzees, with several communities habituated for tracking. Chimpanzee trekking has an over 90% success rate - much higher than other locations. The experience involves hiking through beautiful forest with experienced guides who track chimp movements through calls and signs.
Beyond chimpanzees, Kibale hosts red colobus monkeys (one of Africa's rarest monkeys), black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, olive baboons, and vervets. The forest also contains over 375 bird species, 250 butterfly species, and small mammals like forest elephants (smaller than savanna elephants) and duikers.
The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary adjacent to the park offers excellent community-led nature walks with boardwalks through papyrus swamps, perfect for bird watching and spotting monkeys. Evening chimp habituation experiences allow visitors to spend an entire day with researchers as chimps wake up, feed, and make their night nests.
