Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Home to nearly half of the world's mountain gorillas. A UNESCO World Heritage site offering incredible gorilla trekking experiences.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of Africa's most ancient rainforests, dating back over 25,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage site spans 331 square kilometers and is home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas - nearly half of the world's remaining population.
The forest gets its name from the dense undergrowth that makes it "impenetrable," creating a mysterious and magical atmosphere. The biodiversity is staggering, with over 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 220 butterfly species.
Gorilla trekking is the main attraction, with 19 habituated gorilla families available for tracking. The experience involves hiking through dense forest with expert guides, ranging from 2-6 hours depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you get one hour of magical observation as they eat, play, and interact.
The forest is also home to other primates including chimpanzees, L'Hoest's monkeys, and colobus monkeys. Birdwatchers will be thrilled with species like the African green broadbill, Grauer's rush warbler, and many more.
